Summary: Kate isn't sure she knows what home is anymore.
Kate doesn’t think she truly knows what home is.
Home is a constant. Home is a place where you feel safe. Home is full of people who will love you no matter what, no matter how bad you mess up. She didn’t have that. She had a house, and she had a mother who cared more about the man who beat her than her own daughter, and she had a father (she stops her tongue on the word ‘step’, forces herself to correct it) who ruined any chance she ever had of being the normal girl.
Maybe that’s why she burned it to the ground.
Kate doesn’t know home, but she certainly knows motel rooms.
She knows motel rooms next to dive bars, where you can see the ugly neon glare from your room. She knows the smell of stale beer and bad cologne on sheets that haven’t been washed in weeks and the sound metal keys make when they jingle in the pockets of the cleaning crew. She knows the lukewarm water of showers and the way it feels to fall asleep somewhere and know that everything you have is temporary.
She knows instability. Maybe that’s all she’s ever known.

Date: 2007-12-13 09:22 pm (UTC)I loved Faith! She was my absolute favorite :)
And yeah, I don't like to spoil people who don't want to be spoiled. The Jack comment was just pointing some of my friends that way is all, sorry if it worries you.
Thanks for reading!

Date: 2007-12-13 10:59 pm (UTC)That is probably one of the best, summarizing, lines I've ever read about Kate. Becuase it says so much. Yes, that's who Kate knows, that's who Kate is.
the way it feels to fall asleep somewhere and know that everything you have is temporary.
The amazing thing about Kate is that that fact, so amazingly well spot on, kills her, but at the same time, she can't have it any other way, she doesn't want it any other way.
I think you did a great job here in the portrait of her character, so ambivalent as she is!
And of course, thanks so much for writing Kate! :D:D I loved this!

Date: 2007-12-13 11:01 pm (UTC)And you're right. She doesn't want that to change. Kate could never settle down, IMO. She tried that with Kevin and she failed.
I'm glad you liked this! Thanks for reading!

Sorry to quote so much, but I really, really loved that section and especially the underlined part. It paints such a powerful picture and provides such insight into her character, I think.

Date: 2007-12-14 08:48 pm (UTC)And quote away. I was trying to work all the things I wanted to say into a few lines and I'm particularly proud of that section, so I'm glad you liked it too.
