The sand crunches softly under her feet as she trudges toward the jungle. Glancing over her shoulder to be sure none is following, Kate slips under a sheltering branch. Now she’s in the forest, with only the muted lapping of the waves as a reminder of the realm just left behind. This is her daily schedule, to get away, if only for a few hours, and meet Sun in the jungle. At the beach and caves there are watchful eyes. Even though no one seems to want to listen to Sawyer, he’d talk anyway. The caves are close quarters, there’s no way they could be disguised there. But the jungle is perfect for being swallowed up and pretending there’s no world beyond the two of them, because of its dense leaves and endless supply of cover. The foliage above filters the sunlight into green rays, and it shines dimly onto Kate’s face while making the stray curl that’s been freed from her bun glisten.

It isn’t just geography that keeps them apart. And not cultural differences either. Sun is passive, dutifully following her husband’s orders in silence, no matter how loud she’s screaming inside. Kate is her polar opposite, and it’s her reactionary emotions that got her in trouble with the law in the first place. But there is a common thread between them. Sun understands Kate in a way no one else can. In a way they balance each other out. Sun’s sweet exterior hides a fiery core, while Kate’s stone façade envelops a cushy center. It’s like they’re crisscrossing lines; one goes one direction, the second goes another, but they come together in the middle.

There’s a crackle of a twig snapping and the leaves rustle, yielding Sun.

They can’t meet at the caves. They can’t meet at the beach. They meet somewhere in the middle.
