The pulsating telephone ring reverberated through the apartment, now on its fourth count. Sun leaned against the bedroom doorframe, not wanting to answer. She knew who it was and what would happen if she picked up.
The answering machine beeped and there was a pause, like the person of the other end was debating whether or not to hang up. Then, “Hi… it’s Kate, but I guess you already knew that,” a breath, “Look, I know you don’t want to talk to me. You’re avoiding my calls and dodging me at the grocery store. Yes, I knew that was you ducking behind the canned peas display, but I decided to leave you alone and give you time. That was a week ago, Sun.” She sighed and if Sun knew Kate, which she did, she was running her fingers through her dark hair. “You know, we don’t have to talk about the big important stuff, we can just make small talk. A little ‘The weather has been strange’ or ‘The funniest thing happened at work today’.”
Sun shifted her shoulders, and bit her lip until it turned white around her teeth.
“Sun, please. This not talking thing is driving me crazy. I miss you.”
Just the corners of Sun’s lips turned up before she forced them down again.
“Sun? I know you’re there, Sun, just please pick up.” Kate paused hopefully, waiting.
Sun hesitantly walked over to the side table where the phone rested, gripping the edges with both fists and eyeing the answering machine, willing it to click off before she could do something stupid like pick up. Her self-control was fading fast.
Then an aggravated sigh, “Fine, I guess I’ll just call back.”
Sun’s hand hovered around the receiver. She closed her eyes and tore the phone from the hook, like ripping off a band-aid.
“Hello”
Kate took a sharp breath before, “Hi.”
