“Isn’t it supposed to be the city of love or whatever?”

Callie’s shoulder bumps the elevator wall of the Hyatt Regency; the several floor descent reminding her of Seattle, overly familiar and comforting. “City of lights,” she corrects, gripping the handle of her luggage.

“Whatever, it can be both. I’m just wondering why I’m here and not Arizona.”

Over the course of the four days that they’ve spent here, Callie’s often wondered the exact same thing. The roommates thing works fine because they stay out of each other’s way with fairly little effort; however this, hanging around at a medical conference for a few days in Paris, was not working. “Because it was an Ortho conference and she’s the head of Peds.”

Cristina frowns, something Callie only notices out of the corner of her eye. “Nothing in that sentence was about me.”

“Okay, you’re my roommate. My roommate who’s into cardio, not that it really matters since there’s no head of cardio for you to follow to the cardio conferences. So there’s this, and it’s surgery, and you really can’t be picky.” The elevator dings, finally, and she takes a breath as she steps out.

Cristina follows, a step behind her, and they’re through the lobby doors and inside a cab headed for the airport before she seems to come up with a reply.

“The woman with the shepherd’s crook deformity and hypophosphatasia, where they did the sub-trochanteric osteotomy,” Cristina lists off as though she’s reading from a script; someone had definitely been paying attention to the various rare cases that had been brought up, “that was interesting.”

Callie smiles; she thinks that might mean ‘thank you’.
