Sorry, I corrected that so as to be clear. His father died in Australia, and Jack had the casket with him on the plane. However when they crashed, and he found the casket his father's body was nowhere to be found. It's one of Lost's other great mysteries so I kind of ran with it.
Glad I cleared the Jack + Claire thing up. It's a fairly recent development, although we've all had our suspicions for about a year now.
