I like intertwining multiple storylines, like they do in the show; it almost feels more natural than just focusing on one character/pairing.
Alex would lie. He's caught between wanting to be the good guy, even if he isn't really sure how, and this person that he's always been, or at least shown to everyone else, who just does not do things like give their girlfriends stuffed animals. And I kind of love that about him.
