There's a few people who have done them pretty well, but far too few for my taste. Thing is, as much as I love them, canon would probably ruin them. And I kind of like the friendship we get on the show because it keeps stringing me along and gives me just enough ideas to write. If they actually had it on the show? I don't think I'd be writing it nearly as much.
But Derek is a pompous asshole. Though I don't necessarily agree with 'turned into' so much as 'pretty much always was'. Guess who I'm not a fan of? lol
